Avalanche accidents, a reminder of the risks in the mountains

1. March 2025

Every winter, we sadly witness hundreds avalanche accidents. Ski touring and freeriding offer incredible nature experiences, but the mountains are unpredictable, and avalanche danger must be taken seriously. Sometimes we need a reminder of the risks in the mountains.

  • More than 500 people lost their lives to avalanches in the alps during the previous 7 seasons.
  • In Europe the total number is 668
  • 90% of fatal avalanches are triggered by the skiers themselves.
  • Survival chances drop drastically after 15 minutes under the snow.

What Can We Do?

  • Preparation: Check avalanche forecasts, weather reports, and recommended safe routes.
  • Gear: Never head into the mountains without an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe – and know how to use them!
  • Knowledge: Take an avalanche safety course, learn about terrain traps and risk factors.
  • Decision-Making: Be willing to turn around! No summit is worth your life.
